App of the week – Draw Something

It’s the app du jour, but here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about the latest must-have download

You may have heard about Draw Something, although you’d be forgiven for not knowing exactly what it is. So, what is Draw Something? Well, it’s a combination of Pictionary and an anagram puzzle with a social edge.

Boring, right? No. It’s massively addictive, while remaining casual and fun. You can play with friends (hook up via Facebook or share your username) or play random roulette with other players online. The problem – historically – with online games is that people don’t play at the same speed, or leave unexpectedly. Or they just want to draw something inappropriate.

Draw Something’s solution is to let you play multiple games at once. And that means you can keep games rolling with friends over days and fill the gaps in between with casual encounters with strangers.

What’s the point of Draw Something? Well, it’s fun. But if that’s not enough for you, there are coins to collect for successful drawings and successful guesswork. And there’s the unfortunate ‘cheat’ of heading to the Coin Shop, where you can part with some real coin in favour of the virtual stuff. Why? No, us either.

Our experiences on Draw Something suggest the ability to draw is far from mandatory, though we grew weary of some of the weaker ‘artists’ efforts pretty swiftly.

Whether Draw Something has longevity remains to be seen. But the nature of social gaming means it's best when it's at the height of its popularity. And that’s why you should be playing Draw Something right now.
