Video hoarding used to be the preserve of people with big cupboards. Then it became for people with big hard drives. But for the roaming hoarder, taking the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Spielberg’s back catalogue and a freely chosen selection of European arthouse cinema on tour was still a tricky prospect.
Enter Air View for the iPhone and iPod Touch, an app that lets you take as much video on the road with you as your PC’s hard drive (or any other hard drive, for that matter) can hold.
Unlike other Wi-Fi video streaming solutions, there’s no need to fiddle about with formats or endure marathon conversion sessions before you don your travelling hat. Just download Air Video to your device, tell the desktop client (Mac or PC) which of your video folders you want to share, and head out the door.
The app converts video on-the-fly and you can set it for different screen sizes and crops. You’ll need a Wi-Fi connection to watch, but for access to any video file on your PC, and loads more room for music and holiday snaps on your phone, that’s a small price to pay.
There’s a free version with limited access to your files, or a full-fat edition costing £1.79. Both are available now from the App Store.
