We've seen plenty of 'upscaling' video players that promise to boost DVD output to something approaching hi-def (some more successfully than others). Now Creative's having a crack at doing it for MP3 audio. The Xmod is based on the X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity audio platform and sits between player and speakers (or headphones should you prefer). It works by examining the bits of the audio damaged during compression, before converting the track into velvety 24-bit surround sound. Creative even reckons it can split movie audio and play on-screen voices through the centre channel while sending background noises through the surround speakers.Unfortunately it needs to stay plugged in to a PC or plug socket so it can't follow you to work but it will work with any audio source.
