Human Rights group Amnesty International has appealed to bloggers to support its campaign for freedom of speech online. Bloggers are being asked to bring the hardships faced by bloggers in other countries to the public eye. Web users in some states have been jailed for criticising government practices, something UK bloggers do not have to fear.‘Freedom of expression online is a right, not a privilege,’ said Steve Ballinger of Amnesty. Amnesty has been vocal in its criticism of Google and Yahoo for aiding regimes like the Chinese government in their efforts to censor online expression. The campaign, known as Irrepressible, coincides with the start of a UN debate about the future of the web. The Internet Governance Forum will discuss issues relating to security and freedom of expression during the weeklong series of meetings from the 30th October to 2nd November. So who’s watching you right now?
