Rest easy, travellers to New York, LA and San Francisco this summer. You no longer have to look at every litter bin as if it is a potential killer. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has just created two new standards for high-tech bomb-proof bins to keep your holiday detonation-free.

According to NIST, "Not only does a trash receptacle (sic) present an easy place for a terrorist to hide an explosive device before making a quiet getaway (er, have they ever been on a NY subway?), but the metal from a bin can rupture into shrapnel that flies outward in all directions."

Bins meeting the new standards will direct the blast upwards rather than outwards, making even large explosions caused by C4 (picture above) nothing more than a mild inconvenience.
