Amazon is in the final stages of discussions with a UK mobile operator and could launch the Kindle ebook reader here by Christmas.

Agreements with book publishers are already reportedly in place while Amazon is also thought to be discussing deals with newspapers and magazine publishers.

A deal with a mobile operator is necessary to make use of the Kindle's always-on internet connection.

Deals with Orange, Vodafone and 3 are thought to have broken down. Vodafone has launched its own ebook reader in Germany and Orange is working on its own model in France.

With those networks apparently ruled out, could O2, which has already snaffled the iPhone and Palm Pre, be set to bring the Amazon Kindle to the UK?
