It seems that hosting the World Cup also gives you early tastes of new gadgetry too – Acer has posted its new PMP on its German website, but remains sketchy on a UK release.
The MP-500 has been the subject of much rumour since last year and, unfortunately, appears to have something of a 2005 spec list.
Its 20GB hard-drive puts in competition with Archos’ useful gang, but the 3.5in, 320x240 pixel screen puts it more at the level of the iPod video and Zen Vision little guys.
Still, it should be a versatile pocket-dweller, with a slot for SD/MMC cards – for loading up your holiday snaps – and support for compressed DivX and MP4 video files. There’s also MP3 and WMA support, although this is unlikely to include downloaded DRMed files.
The 4-hour battery is decent, if overshadowed by the Cowon iAudio A2’s whopping 10 hours, and it weighs a relatively light 220g.
Acer told us it isn't yet clear whether or not the MP-500 will make it over to the UK – we’ll let you know if this changes. At the moment it’s available in Europe for 350 euros (£240), but if you want a round-up of all the best currently available video jukies, check out our August issue, which will be in shops from 3rd July.
