Acer's laptop launch in New York today was so big we wouldn't be surprised if you could see it from the top of the Rockefeller Center. But with two Blu-ray-packing notebooks designed to punt your home cinema system into the bin, next to your collection of HD DVDs, who can blame them?
The new Gemstone Blue range comes in two flavours: 16in and 18.4in both with Windows Vista and Full HD 1920x1080 displays. Acer is also keen to blow the native resolution trumpet with 16:9 standard on both models – perfect for movies.
The Blu-ray drives are standard spinners – no burning here – but the blue theme continues through to an illuminated CineDash media console; a touch sensitive control panel to the left of the keyboard allowing you to easily skip scenes, navigate menus or play and pause discs.
On the larger 8920 model (pictured) Acer has also managed to cram in a full 5.1 speaker setup with Dolby Home Theater and Tuba CineBass sub for intestine-troubling rumbles.
If your Blu-ray collection is yet to begin then there's also an optional TV tuner, but once you've dipped your toe into the high-def disc waters an HDMI-out will mean you don't have to always watch them on your laptop.
Sadly, we're heading back across the Atlantic tomorrow morning, but both models should be following in April. You get the popcorn, we'll sort out the movies.
