5 of the best folding bikes

Fold back the gears with these funky two-wheelers that work as well on the train as they do on the road

Montague Boston 8

This is a stylish, lightweight, full-sized folding bike with an 8-speed internal gear hub. Folding up in a few seconds, nice touches such as quick-release mudguards (easily stowed in a bag) and an upright urban riding position make it both city- and suburb-friendly. It's not quite as compact as most but the Boston 8 is still a great portable ride.

FreeGo Folding 17.5Ah

Pedals are fine but sometimes you just need a bit of help in the mornings – step up the electric FreeGo. Its chunky, 36V 17.5Ah power pack offers up three levels of automated power or use the twist throttle for more control. At 22kg you won't be carrying the bike far unless you're some kind of beefcake – taken as a long-range electric bike, this folder makes real sense.

Pacific Cycle IF Mode

The IF comes close to the amazing bikes of the future promised to us in '80s TV shows such as Street Hawk. It uses built-in magnets to bind the wheels together and the bike's chain is encased in a grease-free, folding-arm, aluminium body that looks as if it could probably fly. Rolling the slimline frame is a doddle but the magents which hold the fold together are a bit weak. Sexy, clever and fast – better gears would make it a winner.

Brompton M3L

All Brompton bikes are made by hand in the UK, from scratch, which explains why it's one of the best bike makers around. The M3L model weighs just 10.7kg and packs in a three speed internal gear hub, as well as a leather Brooks saddle that breaks in beautifully. This micro machine folds up small enough to pop between your legs on the train and mix and match colours are available. Well-made, light, compact and rideable – a cracking commuter.

Tern Link C7

The Tern Link C7 dishes out all the treats of a folding bike, at a more affordable price than we’ve seen anywhere. But there’s no scrimping on quality with a 7 speed Shimano gearset, a 6061 aluminium frame, and a total weight of a not-too-heavy-to-carry 12.4kg.
