3G iPhone week – what we wanted, what we got

So that’s it then, Steve Jobs has just ripped the covers off the new iPhone 3G  and unsurprisingly, it looks the business. But while compet

What we wanted

A sharp new iPhone with 3G

What we got

A sharp new iPhone with 3G and HSDPA. Jobs says the data speeds are faster than those on the N95 and that it’ll help us get to grips with all those apps we’ll be downloading.

What we wanted

GPS capability and geotagging for photos

What we got

GPS is on board. We were pretty surprised to see it, but it looks great and will surely give the likes of Nokia and HTC a run for their money. There's also geotagging, which means keeping track on your pics is now a breeze too.

What we wanted

Over–the–air iTunes downloads

What we got

Nothing. Nada. Not even one mention. Although with 3G now in place, we reckon we’ll get to see this later in the year. Please!

What we wanted

An iPhone Nano

What we got

This one proved to be a classic non–starter. But with the iPhone 3G actually coming in at around £100, it’ll be cheaper than the iPod nano. We know what we’d prefer. What we wanted

All new .Mac

What we got

MobileMe. Basically, a hearty refresh of the original .Mac, with online storage, but this time with over–the–air syncing of calendars, contacts and mail. You go to me.com and off you head. You get a sixty day free trial, and it goes live in July. Still, we can get this for free on Google instead.

What we wanted

Snow Leopard

What we got

Well, we didn’t get to see it, but developers are getting a look at early versions today. So now we can get pumped about a new OS rocking up in early 2009. Macworld anyone?

What we wanted

Stacks of new apps with the App store

What we got

SJ wasn’t lying when he said the iPhone SDK would give the iPhone a heft. We saw tons of awesome apps during the keynote, including the already outed Super Monkey Ball, a wicked AP app for getting local news and filing stories, plus eBay and Typepad’s instant blogging interface. Stay tuned for a feature on the best ones later this week.
