Whispers are reaching our highly tuned ears that mobile network, 3, and master of internet dog ‘n’ bones, Skype, are getting ready to hit us with a jointly developed phone.We’ve no rock solid details right now but the news pixies reckon that the slimline Skype branded handsets will allow completely unrestricted use of the free phone calls to other Skype users, just as long as you either top-up at least £10 a month or take out a contract.Skype is already an option for customers on 3’s unrestricted X-Series tariffs but this would be the first phone carrying the Skype brand. Interestingly, we’ve also been hearing murmurs of a new BenQ smartphone that switches seamlessly between normal GSM mobile calls and VoIP – could the two rumoured phones be one and the same?Up until now many networks have disabled VoIP services on their mobiles, worried that we’ll neglect their paid-for minutes in favour of the gratis calls that Skype offers over Wi-Fi. If this latest partnership turns out to be true we could see some seriously cheap phone bills dropping onto doormats all over the land.
