We’ve heard news that’ll put an icy wind up the backsides of iTunes and co: one in five copies of Gnarls Barkley’s chart-topping single Crazy were downloaded on 3 mobiles last week.
Currently, a whopping 6,000 downloads of the track are made every day by 3 punters, making the single Top of the Pops and the network’s fastest-selling song.
It’s not this track alone that’s getting mobile-music fiends in a lather, though. The 3G outfit also sells around 200,000 per month, making up over 53 per cent of all mobile audio track downloads since the start of this year.
The upshot is that 3 is celebrating its millionth audio download this week and is – according to the Official Charts Company (OCC) – top of the mobile downloading pops.
3 has been a pioneer in the uncharted territories of mobile downloads – it was the first to offer full length music videos and dual downloads to mobiles and PCs – and it seems to have paid off.
To continue its good work, 3’s got a new tariff up its sleeve: Talk and Text 700, for which you’ll get 5 download tracks per month. If you don’t fancy the tariff, but you have a 3 mobile, you can download songs for 99p a pop during April and May.
