2011 in tech – April

April saw the release of Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play – but Sony was soon left looking like an April Fool over the hacking of the PlayStation Network

April was a month of mixed fortunes for Sony. It started well, with the release of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handset. The first PlayStation phone, it turned out to be something of a compromise – but as more optimised titles arrive on the phone it's coming into its own.

However, Sony's winning streak was short-lived. Its next-gen portable gaming device, the NGP, was delayed – and then in the middle of the month, hackers targeted the PlayStation Network, making off with passwords, billing addresses, credit card info and leaving the service offline for a week.

Elsewhere, Spotify trimmed its free music allowance, while early rumours suggested that Apple's new iPhone – then assumed to be the iPhone 5 – would be delayed until autumn.
