Launched not long ago in China, the OPPO Reno Ace Gundam Edition is a collaboration between OPPO and Gundam's 40th-anniversary campaign. Limited to only 30,000 units, it utilises the OPPO Reno Ace as the base smartphone, giving it a design overhaul that pays homage to the Gundam franchise. It is a full-featured set with additional bells and whistles that would certainly make any Gundam fans scream. The downside, however, is that there is no information about its availability anywhere else on earth except its home country, China. So, the best we could do at the Stuff Malaysia offices is to do our best to give you a quick hands-on glimpse of this mobile suit... I mean smartphone.

The Gundam Smartphone

The OPPO Reno Ace Gundam Edition will impress any Gundam fans right out of the box. It's technically an OPPO Reno Ace with a back panel that features some sci-fi motifs and a Gundam head emblem to define the collaborative endeavours between the two brands. The metallic finish shimmers under light and has a matte-finish ever so slightly and feels really smooth when held on hand.

A Tiny Souvenir

Along with the phone is a small (about 1-inch) metal emblem, which states "Beyond 40th Gundam Since 1979"... Oh god, has it been that long? Anyway, it's just a souvenir and possibly does nothing aside from being a keepsake and a reminder of how zealous you are as a Gundam fan to the point of buying this special edition phone. Ultimately, it's the thought that counts for a small touch like this, which shows how much OPPO and Gundam would like to honour their fans and customers.

It's RX-78-2's Shield!

The protective case that comes included in the box is a specially designed unit that pays most homage to the most famous (or most marketed) Gundam, the RX-78-2. Taking cues from the RX-78-2's shield, it is made of silicone material and fits the OPPO Reno Ace Gundam Edition like a glove. It immediately gives the phone a "trademark" Gundam look because the shield design is a mainstream symbol and is heavily used in other collaborative efforts in manufacturing Gundam-licensed products.

On the inside, it's velvety with etchings that show the original Gundam logo and a full image of the RX-78-2 Gundam. The best part is, it's official.

Buttery-smooth Custom UI

As expected, the OPPO Reno Ace Gundam edition has a custom UI that runs very smoothly thanks to the 90Hz display. It's technically a theme, that also applies skins over the default apps. It's cute in a kind of way, and also provides that mecha-anime look.

And because this phone is technically a China-exclusive, it does not have Google Apps.

Overall Impression

The OPPO Reno Ace Gundam Edition is a great looker and would please the fans. Unfortunately, since it isn't available outside of China, there are shortfalls to be expected such as the absence of Google Apps.

All in all, if this is made available here in Malaysia, the OPPO Reno Ace Gundam Edition will make any Gundam fan feel extra special.

The OPPO Reno Ace Gundam Edition is how collaborations should work. The phone looks amazing as is and even better with its case on. It's a flagship-class model, which is currently only available in China. Here's to hope that OPPO realises how much hearts they would win globally if this gets out of the country's borders.
