The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom is the brand’s flagship launched just before the end of 2019, possibly making it the brand’s best smartphone to date. Unlike its predecessor (the standard OPPO Reno), the Reno 10x Zoom, as its name suggests, hints at its camera prowess and delivers quite exceptionally in that department. Moreover, the Reno 10x Zoom has such a streamlined body with no camera protrusions, making it a rather unique and beautiful smartphone. The Stuff Team is more than happy to award the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom with the Best Smartphone Camera and Best Smartphone Design awards in the Asia Tech Awards 2018-2019 for those features and all that it has to offer for a reasonable price.

Design

The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom might seem like another typical large-sized smartphone with a glass back at a glance, but if you do inspect closer, it has an almost bezel-less display on the front while the triple cameras on the rear do not protrude and sit just below the transparent glass back panel made from Gorilla Glass 5, giving the entirety a very clean look and a non-obstructed handling experience. The only thing you’d ever feel on the back is probably the O-dot, a ceramic gem that is designed to provide the Reno 10x Zoom a slight lift when it’s laid down on a flat surface and on its back.

The front is a 6.6-inch OLED display, which is Gorilla Glass 6-enforced and is mostly bezel-free at 93.1% screen-to-body ratio. The bezel-free design is yet again thanks partially to a special pop-up selfie camera that also doubles as a flash, which pivots up at an 11-degree angle when activated. The mechanism feels robust and definitely looks way stronger than the usual pop-up cameras from other smartphones. If a fall is detected when the pop-up camera is in use, it will automatically retract and hide to prevent damage, which is something that really impressed me after several safe tests.

Going back to how the front and back surfaces of the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom are free of obstruction and made almost bezel-less, it’s also the in-screen fingerprint sensor, which really made the difference. The fingerprint sensor ran flawlessly speedy and for those who don’t want to use the feature, can opt for face unlock, which is also not bad in terms of its unlocking speed.

The Reno 10x Zoom does not have a headphone jack but a pair of USB-C earphones is provided out-of-the-box. Speaking of that, a case is also provided for the smartphone, which is made of a soft-touch rubber material and can really enhance the grip seeing as the Reno 10x Zoom could be quite slippery with its glass back.

Camera

The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom has a 48MP f/1.7 main wide-angle camera, a 13 MP sensor with 5x optical zoom and an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle lens. And with a name that states 10x Zoom, I just have to show you the quality of photography that the phone can offer. Here are some of the shots in several formats.

Performance

Every app runs smoothly on the Reno 10x Zoom thanks to Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor with 8GB RAM. Storage is also ample at 256GB internal. Our model is a dual SIM version (nano-sim) and allows for expandable storage via MicroSD too (up to 256GB).

The 6.6-inch display’s resolution is 2340 X 1080p while having a 387ppi density, all in a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. By having an OLED panel, images are crisp, vibrant and has good clarity throughout.

The battery is a 4065mAh and features fast charging (20W, VOOC) however, to our dismay, it doesn’t come with wireless charging.

Conclusion

To wrap up this review, the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom is a hefty device at 210g but is a well-designed and very beautiful smartphone that understands the annoyance of protruding cameras. Bearing a name that suggests its camera’s abilities, it performs exceptionally well even for low-light night shots. The pivoting pop-up selfie-camera and flash unit is a fine and defining feature, which might have caused the water and dust-resistance to be sacrificed but it’s a small price to pay considering that it allowed the phone to have a great bezel-less design and a streamlined back panel.

The performance and battery life are expected of a flagship smartphone and I reckon that it will not disappoint anyone for being a daily driver. If you’re not the type who will use your phone next to the pool and wireless charging is negligible, the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom has everything a flagship needs to be and is certainly dressed to impress.
