The Mi Mix line from Xiaomi has always been... unique. Xiaomi treats it like a testing ground for the craziest types of design as well as the most insane tech. Now it looks like Xiaomi is sticking to this style by announcing the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha that comes with a wrap around display that gives the smartphone a 180.6 percent screen-to-body-ratio!
That's not the only thing the smartphone has to offer; Xiaomi has also become the first manufacturer to release a smartphone with Samsung’s crazy 108MP image sensor inside. The newly announced Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha 5G concept phone uses the ultra-high-res image sensor and a wrap-around “surround screen” that is a sight to behold. Because of this, it also doubles as a selfie camera, making it the best selfie camera available in the market though this is based on specs so far.
You might be thinking; wouldn't it be problematic to be constantly touching the screen when you hold it? What if you scroll down or tap on buttons you don't mean to when you're just trying to hold the smartphone? Well during the keynote, Xiaomi stated that the Mi Mix Alpha will use AI and specially designed embedded sensors to prevent unwanted display touches, swipes, and taps along the edges and rear of the phone.
This is important as the Mi Mix Alpha won't even come with physical volume control buttons. Like the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, you will get a similar software-only volume control keys with similar haptic feedback.
In other specs, Xiaomi has touted the Snapdragon 855+ chipset, 12GB of RAM, 512GB of UFS3.0 storage, a 4,050 mAh battery, and up to 40W fast wireless charging will be included. There's no saying if this smartphone will ever hit Malaysia, as Xiaomi has tagged it a "concept smartphone"; which means it's unlikely to be widely available. With a price tag of USD$2800 (~MYR11,740) it's unlikely many of us can afford it too.
Still, we have to give props to Xiaomi. That is one unique and (on paper) impressive smartphone and we still hope we can at least witness more of what it has to offer.
