Surprise! Oppo R5 was unveiled alongside the N3, and it's insanely thin

Mirror, mirror on the wall, which one is the slimmest of them all?
Oppo’s R5 smartphone is the definition of thin

Remember how we told you Oppo could be launching its R5 smartphone soon after the inauguration of the N3? We weren’t wrong. The R5 has made its debut – literally within minutes of the N3’s arrival.

And the sources that picked up on the R5’s arrival (it was spotted on an Indonesian Postel website similar to the FCC in the US and TENAA in China) correctly predicted something else too – that it will be one of the thinnest smartphones in the market.

The R5 is the successor to the Oppo R3, which, at 6.3mm, was the thinnest 4G smartphone of its time. Now, history has repeated itself and Oppo has outdone its own record with the R5. The nip and tuck has resulted in a 4.85mm waferthin unit.

As for its looks, it’s got a macro-arc frame made of alloy. Be amazed, because the R3 apparently houses a cooling element, made by a phase-shifting material, that changes when heat is generated to cool the phone.

Weighing 155g, the 5.2in smartphone boasts a full HD 423ppi resolution on its AMOLED screen. Its 13MP back camera falls a little short compared to the N3, but it’s better than some of the others in the market. Its front snapper sits at 5MP. Curb your disappointment, because the R5’s camera is not rotatable like its N-series smartphones.

Its insides are a force to be reckoned with too. It’s got 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 2.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 Octa-Core processor, and a 2000mAh Li-Po battery with Oppo’s Rapid Charge technology. The unit will run on Android 4.4 with Oppo’s Color OS 2.0 and is LTE compatible too.

If you want a look and have a feel of the device before purchasing it, your best bet would be the newly opened Oppo store in Singapore. Once the R5 is launched, it's highly likely that it'll appear alongside Oppo's other gadgets.

The R5's price is tagged at US$499, so you can expect it to hover around RM1631 when it's available here.
