Fancy a cocktail at the end of a long hard day at work, but can’t be arsed enough to go through the trouble of making one? You don’t have to keep popping them beer cans anymore if Somabar can deliver on its promise.

The premise is simple. Fill device with spirits and mixers. Find recipes. Pick one you really crave for. Tap to mix. Wait five seconds. Drink. Or at least, that’s the experience that Somabar is promising. It’s a Wi-Fi connected, craft cocktail appliance, designed for the home kitchen.

The Somabar isn’t an overly complicated device. It utilises easy-to-fill bottles that they call Soma pods, which are leak-free, and easily installed or removed – similar to the water tank on a Nespresso machine. It’s a great idea because you can easily store perishable fluids in the fridge, or chill them when necessary.

The science of mixing

The fluids are extracted from the pods by positive displacement pumps, and the ingredients mixed through the use of static vanes, which mix the cocktail through the combination of fluid dynamics, kinetic energy, and turbulence. The idea was to minimise the use of moving parts and hence, reduce maintenance needs.

The good people behind Somabar also claim that it is easy to clean as well. The machine itself has an automated, internal water flushing system, while the Soma pods are dishwasher safe.

The app is your mixologist

The app that controls all of this looks good as well. It will suggest drinks based on the ingredients you have, or based on your preferences. The app will notify you if you don’t have an ingredient on hand. It will also track your inventory and inform you if you are running low on any item. You can also source, or create and share your cocktail recipes with the Somabar community.

You can get it now at the Kickstarter site for US$399 sans shipping at the early bird price, which sounds perfectly reasonable for what it does. What’s amazing is that they’ve already met their US$50,000 goal twice over with 27 days to go...
