It doesn’t happen to everyone, but when it happens, it’s a real pain. That’s why Kickstarter project Smart Unit has quite an appeal.
In the event you lose your luggage, or if it gets stolen, or if it simply got routed to the wrong plane, the Smart Unit, created by LEV Technology, is able to pin point the location of your luggage almost anywhere in the world, so as long as it has access to a network. Isn’t that just dandy? It’s just the size of a portable hard drive and pairs with a smartphone via an app.
The app will notify you if your luggage moves away from you beyond a certain distance (about 30 meters), and will do the same when you are nearby so that it’s a little easy to find after you get off the plane. If you enable watch mode, it will send you an alert if the luggage is opened. You can also set up guest accounts so you can lend the Smart Unit to friends and family for them use and track their luggage from their own phones as well.
The battery in Smart Unit lasts about a week with one full charge, which should be sufficient to cover an unfortunate leg of your journey. If the worst happens and your luggage ends up on a different continent, Smart Unit will connect to any available GSM/GPRS networks to show its location once it lands.
The Smart Unit is set to retail for US$99, although you can snag a ‘very early bird’ unit for US$59. As of now there are still units available at their Kickstarter page. And if you're into that sort of thing, you can shell out US$139 for a Kickstarter edition.
