Shutterbugs, the Sony World Photography Awards 2015 are here

Think your photos can stand up with the best of the world? Then give the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards a go. Organised by the World Photography Organisation, winners will be announced at a big ceremony in London on April 23 2015.

The contest has been running since 2007, with over 700,000 images from 230 countries submitted.

Malaysia also has its own Malaysia National Award that will honour the best image taken by a local photographer entering into any of the ten Open categories of the competition. Last year's winner was Hairul Azizi Harun, who encountered various crash barriers to get a picture of interest.

Shutterbugs, the Sony World Photography Awards 2015 are here

The winner of the 2015 L’Iris d’Or/Photographer of the Year title and the Open Photographer of the Year will receive cash prizes, while all category winners will get camera equipment from Sony. The Student Focus winner will win cameras to be given to his or her university.

Winners and shortlisted photographers will also have their works published in the 2015 edition of the Sony World Photography Awards book and exhibited at Somerset House in London.

Here are the categories in competition:

  • Professional – 15 categories judged on a series of work.
  • Open – 10 categories judged on a single image.
  • Youth – three categories for photographers under 20. Judged on a single image.
  • Student Focus – for higher education photography students aged 18-30.

Deadline? 23.59 GMT, Monday January 5, 2015. The Professional competition is the exception with entries closing at 23.59 GMT on Thursday January 8, 2015.
