Samsung's Tizen-powered Z1 phone is official in India

The biggest mystery here is why it insists on calling it the Z1 when there's already a Sony Xperia Z1 on the market

It's here, after a lot of hiccups: a Samsung phone running on its custom OS called Tizen.  The official announcement was made on its website, though at press time the phone's only been launched in India so far.

Don't be lusting after the Samsung Z1 yet, though. Its specs are decidedly on the low-end with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, just 768MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and a 4-inch 480x800 pixel screen. It seems Samsung is hedging its bets by trotting out this rather basic phone or perhaps trying to demonstrate that Tizen doesn't require high specs to run well. The camera is also a mere 3.1 megapixels which pretty much proves this is a mass-market low-end phone.

More Tizen to come?

In a post on Samsung's site, Samsung called Tizen a 'lighter' mobile OS that required less processing power and memory which translates to less energy used. Despite not scheduling (as yet) any Tizen developer events, Samsung noted that more than anything the company relied on developers coming on board to make Tizen a success.

We'll probably have to wait until the reviews come out for the phone, though, before passing judgement but still it doesn't bode well for Samsung to push out a phone that seems, on paper, much the same as Samsung's frankly mediocre entry-level smartphones.

With Nokia already having a firm footing in the 'really cheap smartphones' market in India, you wonder whether it will do Samsung much good trying to diversify into an area that promises volume but on paper might not deliver attractive profit margins.

Perhaps they'd be better off trying to stave off the attack of the high-spec super-affordable phones coming from China.

The Samsung Z1 is currently going for 5,700 rupees (RM328).
