Samsung had quietly 'outed' its A7 smartphone at the Malaysian launch of the A3 and A5 selfie phones, mentioning it in a brochure and hiding it in plain sight.

But as to why it chose to launch the A3 and A5 smartphones while leaving the A7 is a mystery, considering Samsung launched all three phones in the Philippines.

Is bigger better?

One of Samsung's big problems, which it is addressing now, is that it has too many models spread out over too many segments.

The main selling point for the A series is the thinness of the phones, but otherwise the middling specs, otherwise uninteresting design and over-much focus on selfies make the phone poor competition for the likes of Xiaomi and Huawei.

In Malaysia, Samsung's strategy is to create brand hype by targetting the A3 and A5 squarely at youth. Specs-wise, however, the A7 has the following upgrades over the A5: a faster processor, a 5.5-inch screen, dual-sim capability and a larger 2,600 mAh battery. Its camera is also 12 megapixels to the A5's 13 megapixels.

Over in the Philippines, the A7 is priced at PHP24,990 (RM1,982) which means if and when it comes to Malaysia, expect it to cost around RM1,500 or so.
