It seems like we may not have to wait until 2020 to see a major jump to higher megapixels for smartphone photography afterall. During the weekend, Redmi CEO Lu Weibing posted on Weibo that a special announcement regarding a new Redmi smartphone will be made today. Sure enough the company released quite an interesting teaser earlier, showcasing a photo taken by what may be their first ever smartphone equipped with a 64MP camera.
The photo sample is allegedly taken by their yet to be revealed smartphone featuring the new sensor, which we speculate that Redmi may be using Samsung’s 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 that was revealed a while back. Included in the sample is a cropped and zoomed-in image of the subject to showcase the photos high resolution - which is pretty impressive seeing that there is no loss in quality whatsoever.
As far as the teaser goes, that’s about all that Redmi had to offer. Chances are, if it is intended to build hype for a product that may be launching soon, we may actually see the first ever 64MP camera smartphone from the company this year. That is, if no other brand decides to overtake them.
