When you have multiple games on different platforms, switching between them can seriously be a pain. Project Ascension plans to fix that, by unifying Steam, Origin and uPlay.
It won't mean that you can completely do away with the clients. Think of it as fancy launcher, like those custom home screens you get on Android devices.
Project Ascension is being developed by a team of 18 volunteers, though that might change as the project nears completion. Expect an open beta coming fall and a full release sometime soon after. To keep up with the development and give feedback to its creators, you can hang out at the official Project Ascension Reddit thread.
