Next generation of Xiaomi devices wants to read your body

Spotted in the wild: the heart rate-sensing Mi Band 1S and fingerprint-reading Redmi Note 2

We’re almost done getting excited about the current crop of Xiaomi devices. And what everyone wants to know now is what’s next for the Chinese company. Thanks to a couple of leaks. it turns out that Xiaomi has its sights set on your body and there are photos to prove it.

The Mi Band is Xiaomi’s first wearable and has won quite a cult following given its highly affordable pricetag. But it’s pretty basic as wearables comes, monitoring your sleep patterns and tracking your steps taken.

With the Mi Band 1S, Xiaomi appears to be taking activity-tracking a little more seriously by incorporating a heart rate sensor on the back of what’s essentially the same design. The leak comes courtesy of Taiwan’s National Communications Commission, whose site the device has been spotted on, making it pretty legit.

Not too excited about a wearable? The next gadget leak should get your pulse racing then.

Hello, Redmi Note 2

The long-rumoured Redmi Note 2’s specs that have been speculated thus far include a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 13MP rear camera, and an octo-core MediaTek MT6795 processor.

But the latest leak also reveals a fingerprint reader on its plastic back à la the Huawei Honor 7 and the Oppo R7 Plus for more intuitive and ergonomic operation. The sneaky shot has since been taken down from Weibo (purportedly by Xiaomi’s request) where it had been making its rounds, but not before Weibo user Zmeric saved it. Guess it’s true what they say - a moment on social media, a lifetime on the internet.

The only question that remains is this - will Xiaomi devices remain as affordable with the addition of body-reading tech components? We’ll just have to wait and see.
