Looks like Netflix is going all out in indulging in your binge watch activities. If you find yourself not having enough time to binge watch, Netflix is currently finding a fix by testing out a feature that allows viewers to watch movies at up to 1.5 times the usual speed. The feature is currently being tested on Android mobile devices, but Netflix warns that it may not become a permanent feature.
The faster speed playback feature is popular with podcasts and YouTube clips, and will be a first for a streaming site if fully implemented but that's raises some level of controversy. While other forms of media like podcasts or a tutorial on Youtube makes perfect sense to take in at a faster speed, Netflix's videos are a form of art considering how most of their entertainment challenges the norm. Netflix has alreadt offended cinephiles by pushing for movies to be released at home at the same time they appear in theaters and allowing viewers to skip opening and ending credits.
Director Judd Apatow objected to the move on Monday, telling Netflix he would call "every director and show creator on Earth to fight you on this. We give you nice things. Leave them as they were intended to be seen.”
Whether or not such a feature will be successful remains to be seen, but it's clear that despite Netflix's desire to keep us binge-watching there are certain tactics not worth looking into.
