Major data breach leaks personal details of Malaysian organ donor accounts

Accounts of over 200000 people compromised

Lowyat has reported another major data breach, this one targeting hundreds of thousands of organ donor accounts.

Just another (serious) breach

In its report, the website said that files containing the details of pledged organ donors were leaked as early as September 2016. The data sources include public hospitals as well as national transplant resource centres.

Though the data dump lists files from 1997 to 2016, the data from 1997 to 2008 contains only auto-generated dummy data. From January 2009 to August 2016 though, the personal details of 220000 organ donors as well as their next-of-kin are listed.

That means over 400,000 individuals’ records have been compromised by this breach. Lowyat says it's part of an earlier reported, larger data breach likely leaked online between September and November 2016.

The tech publication has alerted the authorities and investigations are underway. The portal’s admins have also been called up by the police for questioning.
