TM may actually offer an affordable alternative to getting internet at home after a leaked slide, supposingly from a Telekom Malaysia (TM) presentation, showed the company’s plan to offer Unifi Air with unlimited data at a discounted price MYR79.
Based on the slide titled "Proposed Plans Consumer/SME", it was originally meant to cost MYR129 but will be offered as a save plan promo of MYR79. It will come with the Huawei B618-65D LTE device which operates on the 2.3MHz band and claims to be able to connect up to 64 devices unlike mobile hotspots which are usually limited to three to five devices. It comes with the usual 24-month contract, no upfront fee and there's no need for a technician as they can install it themselves.
This is not the first time TM is unveiling a plan that uses the B618-65D LTE router – back in March, we covered the commercial rollout of a similar service in Setiawalk, Puchong. The service, called Unifi Home Wireless Broadband, also costs MYR79 a month and has a 60GB data quota, and users are given the choice to purchase the router for RM565.
Some online websites have speculated that Unifi Air could be a part of TM's solution in addressing woes faced by Streamyx customers. Due to limited infrastructure, some Streamyx customers on copper technology have yet to be upgraded to more affordable Unifi plans with higher speeds. It's also important to note that on June 19, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said TM has been given one month to present a proposal on possible solutions to address connectivity and pricing issues faced by Streamyx customers.
TM has yet to make an official announcement themselves on this leak, but if this gains a lot of positive feedback, TM may actually ride the wave and push this promo even more.
