IFA 2014: Play PS4 games in the bath with the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

Sony's super-light slate is dinky, waterproof, and streams next-gen games over Remote Play

Sony's latest tablet has wafted into IFA 2014 – a slimline 8in slab whose 270g weight barely registers in your hand.

It may not look like a gaming powerhouse, but it'll play next-gen games – using Sony's Remote Play service to stream PS4 titles.

As well as being a bit of a mouthful, the Z3 Tablet Compact is – according to Sony – the lightest and slimmest compact tablet (which it rather narrowly defines as larger than 7in and smaller than 9in). It's certainly svelte, at 6.4mm thin – but that counts for nothing if the specs aren't up to scratch.

Inside, you get a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, plus 3GB RAM and 16GB storage (expandable to 128GB using microSD); the tablet will run Android 4.4 KitKat at launch. You also get a 4500mAh battery to keep things chugging along – Sony claims it's good for 13 hours of video playback – plus 8MP and 2.3MP cameras.

The 8in, 1080p resolution packs Sony's own Triluminos technology – as seen on the Xperia Z2 Tablet – which it claims delivers a wider colour gamut. It's also IP65 and IP68 waterproof and dust-resistant, and can survive a dunk in up to 1.5m of water for half an hour.

Pricing and availability have yet to be revealed, but expect LTE and Wi-Fi variants in the shops from Q3 2014.
