Gran Turismo 6 lets you race against your real-world times

As long as you're driving a Toyota and racing in Japan, that is
Toyota Sports Drive Logger for Gran Turismo 6

Toyota is launching a telemetry recorder that will let you race against your real-world times in Gran Turismo 6.

The Sports Drive Logger upgrade for the Toyota 86 will track acceleration, braking, steering angles, gear shift data, engine speed and vehicle speed from the car's controller area network, as well as location information from its own GPS system.

You'll be able to pop the data onto a USB key and transfer it to your PlayStation 3, where you can replay it in Gran Turismo 6 – and race against your real-life track run.

As you can see from the video above, it's frighteningly accurate – you'll be able to compare your telemetry with that of professional drivers, learning from their techniques to better your in-game and real-world performance.

The only downside? The Sports Drive Logger is only available for the Toyota 86, and only works on the Fuji Speedway International Course, the Tsukuba Circuit 2000 Course, and the Suzuka Circuit International Course. All of which, you'll note, are in Japan – and Toyota has not announced any plans to release the technology to other markets.

Still, if you meet the very specific criteria of its target market and have ¥91,800 (RM5346) to burn, head on over to Japan on 2nd June to get your racing fix.
