Frequent Grab users in the Klang Valley will now enjoy cheap rates on fixed fares from now on.
Cheaper rates already in effect
The new rates were active from 10 October and is currently only applicable to the Klang Valley. Previously, the rate was RM1.30 per km in the Klang Valley but it has now been reduced to RM1.10 per km during weekends and during non-peak hours on weekdays.
Grab has set its peak hours as 6-10am and 5-8pm, which is when the RM1.30 higher rate will be applicable.
Uber in the past has also adjusted its fares, so it looks like competition will remain fierce between the two main ridesharing apps in the country. Competing apps have as yet to appear while both Grab and Uber have been consistently running various promos, including delivering things as diverse as coffee, durian and kittens.
Grab has also been fairly competitive at recruiting drivers and has even gone so far as to insure both drivers and passengers, giving more incentives for drivers to register with them.
Will there be an upcoming price war in future? It's too soon to say but it's clear there'll be more to come from the ridesharing apps.
