If you logged into Gmail early today, you might have been greeted by a surprise announcement: Google's e-mail service has a new feature. Say hello to Shelfies, Google's inventive reimagining of the selfie.
Coincidentally, Gmail hits the double-digits in age, and for its birthday, Google says it's all about us. Or you, rather. Ever since custom themes were allowed, Gmail users have been happily customising their Gmail screens with photos of themselves. That's why Google has decided to help you share you selfies with the world via its new platform: the Gmail Shelfie, also known as the shareable selfie.
Love your friends, share your selfies
Google explains their justification thusly: "Gmail Shelfie is built on the idea that you shouldn’t be selfish with your selfie. With just a few clicks, your mom, your aunt, or that girl you have a crush on can set your Shelfie as their Gmail theme so they can enjoy checking, reading, and writing emails while seeing your friendly face in the background."
While waiting for your artistically-rendered self-portrait to be shared with the world, go ahead and set your theme to Gmail's top trending Shelfies. Also check out who is trending Shelfie-wise on the big G's official Google+ page.
We personally can't wait to share photos with our beloved pets with the world.
