Google has been quietly adding a new feature to Maps that will encourage people to add their food photos.
It’s an offshoot from a service that Google was trying out named Tablescape. It was about adding photos of food and calling them ‘foodographs’, with specialised cagegories, featured content and tips on ‘foodography’.
The service never went past the experimental stage but Google instead seems to have taken what it’s learned to encourage local guides “level 3 and above” to add photos to specific food-related locations. In an email sent to local guides, Google adds a link about notifications that will pop up “after you’ve taken a photo in public places that Google thinks are interesting to other people, like restaurants and bars.”
