Spotify’s new Spotlight throws focus on rising stars

Spotify has just launched Spotlight, a new feature that aims to showcase rising stars not only by pointing users towards their recorded music but to live sessions, interviews and editorial content.

Spotlight has already kicked off in Spotify’s web player with two acts: Lorde and Haim. It’s a push to call either of these “unknown”, as both have enjoyed plenty of buzz in recent months, but still, it’s nice to see Spotify actively trying to push new music.

Spotify is also casting its eye back to classic albums with the new Landmark website, a stylishly-designed page that acts as a sort of “web show” concerned with the making of well-loved records by interspersing songs with interviews, videos and commentary. The first is Nirvana’s In Utero, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released an official “main trailer” for the upcoming second part of The Hobbit trilogy: The Desolation of Smaug. We won’t spoil it but it features Legolas, Lost’s Evangeline Lilly as an elf and the most we’ve seen of the treasure-hoarding dragon Smaug so far.
