Facebook Messenger will tempt you into wasting more time with Instant Games

Play more games with your friends from within the app itself

If you thought the basketball game in Messenger was cute, you'll enjoy Facebook's latest series of games for Facebook.

The company has just announced Instant Games, a new Facebook Messenger feature that will let you play, yes, games with other people.

Compete on points

How does it work? All you need to do is open up a chat and start a game by clicking on the controller icon that appears just below the chat box.

Don't worry if you haven't seen the icon in Messenger yet; it's slowly rolling out to different countries and you'll see it in your app eventually.

What kind of games are available? Nothing too complex. There's Space Invaders, Galaga, Pac-Man - mostly classic retro games that are easy to pick up and when you play against friends, Messenger will keep score.

This is probably Facebook's strategy to have people spend more time on Messenger than they already do. We already predict plummeting levels of productivity everywhere.

Still, since holiday season is coming up it's also a neat way to spend time with people far away but still accessible online. While there's a small-ish number of games available right now, expect more to be added in the upcoming months.

Is it free? Oh, yes it is.
