For the first time ever, the mean green flying Volocopter takes to the skies and breaks new ground in the aviation industry.

As a shining example of winging innovation, the E-Volo VC200 is a sight for sore eyes. Instead of the usual 4 ceiling fan-like blades perched atop the copter, you get a whirring nest of 18 electrically driven rotors. Without a combustion engine burning fuel and wheezing impurities into the air, the world is a cleaner place to live in.

Aside from making breathing a lot safer, the E-Volo VC200 is a less traumatising ride as it’s more stable. Built to accommodate two people, it’s engineered on the philosophy of safety in numbers. Having 18 rotors equipped means that up to four of them can fail and the other rotors will keep the Volocopter hovering. Any more than that, and a built-in parachute will be deployed to land the aircraft safely. We know what you’re thinking, but it’s still better odds than riding the Hindenburg. 

One small lift for the VC200...

We meant taking to the skies metaphorically. Although the E-Volo VC200 lifted off for the first time recently, the unmanned Volocopter only made it as far as the top of the dm-arena in Karlsruhe, Germany.

But you’d also want to err on the side of caution when the bird you’re trying to fly could change the face of aviation forever. Not to mention the fact that it cost a bank-breaking 100,000€ (RM439,882) to fund via German crowdfunding platform SeedMatch.

Unfortunately, only a flight time of 20 minutes is available at present due to the limited energy capacity of existing batteries. Looks like that round the world trip is still out of the question.
