Apple confirms a new Mac Pro is coming

The new desktop will be upgradeable and offer a better display

The last Mac Pro was gorgeous, no doubt, but professional users bemoaned its lack of upgrade options. That is changing soon, Apple confirmed in a briefing.

Coming next year

Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller told a briefing in Cupertino that the new desktop would not be coming this year, but it was in the process of being redesigned.

The current Mac Pro will still be sold, with a performance bump and later this year, there will be improved iMacs. A new external display will also be happening, which will probably appeal to Pro users.

Apple seems to be doing well in the Mac  department, with a 100 million user base so far with the company shipping 80 per cent notebooks to 20 per cent desktop computers.

It has been engaging with pro users to get their feedback on their actual workflows and how they use Apple products, in the effort to improve on the Mac Pro line.

The new Mac Pro will have a modular system, alongside a Pro display. If you'd been hoping for a touch display, Apple is still not going down the path of touch Mac screens. Instead, the iPad Pro being used alongside the Mac is to Apple a better solution than a Mac touch screen and Apple will focus on making them work well together.

In answer to the criticism that Apple was no longer paying much attention to its desktop users, Schiller said: “The Mac has an important, long future at Apple, that Apple cares deeply about the Mac, we have every intention to keep going and investing in the Mac."

So if you're in the market for an iMac, one is coming soon. If you want a modular Mac Pro, expect that next year.
