Alcatel Hero and Idol S smartphones make Malaysian debut in January

Alcatel tries to muscle in on Galaxy Note territory with high-end stylus-equipped device

Despite a rather crowded Android smartphone market, Alcatel is doing its level best to keep up, with two new smartphones on their way to Malaysia.

The models are the rather fabulously named Hero and Idol S. The Hero seems to be the more interesting of the two, with a 6-inch full HD IPS display, quad-core processor and a hefty 13 megapixel camera.

A hero worth waiting for?

Positioning itself as a Galaxy Note alternative, it comes with a stylus and preloaded handwriting recognition apps. It also comes with two extras – the MagicFlip, a cover that has embedded LED to display messages about the phone without needing to open the cover.

There’s also a Bluetooth accessory that lets you receive SMS, calendar entries, make calls and do other things without needing to take the phone out of your pocket.

The Idol S, though, is Alcatel’s first 4G LTE smartphone, but with lower specs. Dual-core processor, a 7.4mm thin profile and a smaller, 4,7-inch HD IPS screen. Alcatel also throws in an 8 megapixel camera.

Currently the IDOL S is only available at Alcatel’s roadshow from the 6th to the 12th of January at Plaza Low Yat’s concourse but will then be available nationwide, with an RRP of RM899.

But if you’re holding out for the Hero, it’s only coming at the end of January 2014 with a yet unannounced retail price.
