Horror fans rejoice! 2017 will see the release of more horror movies than there are months in a year.
This includes some well established horror movie franchise sequels, such as Saw and Insidious, as well as some fresh freaky faces . We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, so let’s spare the small talk and get right down to the macabre movies that will thrill and undo you for the rest of the year to come.
Get Out - Now showing
A movie that has already spawned its own meme, Get Out is a racially charged horror flick that seems extra relevant to America nowadays. Don’t let the otherwise unimpressive memes of teenagers running headlong into the camera fool you - the movie is intense, trippy and horrific.
Written by Jordan Peele and also his directorial debut, the film scores yet another huge success for Blumhouse Productions - a name now synonymous with the term “Horror Movie Moguls”.
Vampire Cleanup Department - Now showing
A movie throwback to the good old days of the Hong Kong zombie film, Vampire Cleanup Department is a modern take on the genre that stays true to its unique horror action comedy roots.
A film for the true Hong Kong zombie movie aficionado, the movie’s cast is littered with well known actors from the genre’s heyday, such as Richard Ng and Chin Siu Ho (the pair last appeared in 2013’s Rigor Mortis), and even offers a cameo by Eric Tsang.
Life - Now showing
Unfortunately, Ryan Reynolds is to Deadpool what Hugh Jackman is to Wolverine. Thanks to the incredible cultural phenomenon of Deadpool, it’s very tempting to call Life - a space horror film starring Reynolds - by the far more impressive title, “Deadpool in Space”.
But judging the film by its own merit, it competently combines the authenticity and claustrophobia of Gravity with the extraterrestrial terror of - well, Alien. A good movie snack to whet your appetite before the next film in the Alien franchise.
