Motorola isn't exactly playing its cards close to its chest with its upcoming Droid Turbo smartphone.

Partner network Verizon has managed to leak several pics of the device itself, with a further snap appearing on the @evleaks Twitter account.

And leaked specs suggest that it could be one of Motorola’s most powerful devices. The Droid Turbo is expected to arrive with a 5.2-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) touch screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset with a 2.65 GHz quad-core CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a massive 3900mAh battery.

But top of the spec sheet is the Droid Turbo's camera – it’s said to have a whopping 21 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, meaning all your pictures should turn out pin-sharp.

The Droid Turbo is also set to be one tough cookie, reportedly packing a scratch-resistant "metallised glass fiber" body, along with a Gorilla Glass 3 screen and a Kevlar-reinforced back panel – perfect for those with butterfingers. It’s also reported that the Droid Turbo will be splash proof – meaning it’ll be able to survive up to 20 minutes of downpour.

Leaked photos on Android Spin confirm some of the above details, revealing that the Droid Turbo packs 3GB RAM and a 2560x1440 display, along with 32GB internal storage. The site claims to have seen documentation that confirms the 21MP camera, 3,900mAh battery and Snapdragon 805 processor, though it doesn't have any photographic evidence to back that up.

Whatever the case, the Droid Turbo looks to be a powerhouse of a phone; and with the Moto X sitting atop our Smartphones Top 10, it looks like Motorola is the manufacturer to beat.

Update 30/10/14: Motorola has now officially confirmed the Droid Turbo's existence and its specifications – and they match those above, with one exception: there's a 64GB storage option if you go for the black nylon finish (the other finish, in red or black Kevlar, tops out at 32GB). It truly is a beefy, powerful phone on paper – a Moto X on steroids, if you like.

Moto claims the battery delivers two days of normal mixed usage per charge, making it about twice as long-lasting as most smartphones.

The leaked photos also confirm that the Droid Turbo will launch with Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box. The phone will reportedly be available in a choice of black or red hues; the two colour options also sport differently-textured back panels.

Update 27/10/14: New photos of the Droid Turbo have been leaked by Moto Firmware, showing off the phone in its retail packaging. While it doesn't confirm any of the Droid Turbo's specs, the snaps do reveal that the phone will come packaged with Motorola's Turbo Charger – which will top up any device kitted out with Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 technology in double-quick time.

Verizon has been sending out press invites for a Droid-branded handset reveal on 28 October, so it is almost set in stone that the device will be unveiled in the coming days - but whether the handset makes it to anywhere else in the world is still in question.

Stay tuned – we’ll update this space with more information should the smartphone make its way to our shores.

Update: 30/10/14: Motorola and Verizon have confirmed that the Droid Turbo is coming – and that it's coming exclusively to Verizon in the US. What does that mean for those of you in other parts of the world? It means you'll have to wait for more news, and perhaps a slightly different edition of the Droid Turbo. Verizon, it seems, has this particular handset all to itself.
