Does the world really need another McLaren?
Alright grouchy pants, did you get out of the wrong side of bed this morning? The world most certainly needs another McLaren, especially when it looks this good. The 570S is the marque's "entry-level" model, which means it will be comfortable to use everyday, yet thumpingly fast when it needs to be.
But surely it can't compete with McLaren's other models at that price, can it?
Jeez, you're a tough one to persuade. If the sleek, mini-P1 styling doesn’t grab you by the netherbits, the fact that it features a snarling 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that's capable of pumping out a staggering 563bhp certainly should. The £145,000 (approx US$215,000) 570S will be able to wallop the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.2 seconds and go on to a top speed of 204mph. That puts it in the ring with the mighty Porsche 911 Turbo S.
What's the secret to its speedy ways?
In short, loads and loads of carbon fibre. It's based on the same carbon fibre MonoCell chassis as the more powerful 650S model, meaning it weighs just 1313kg without all of the petrol and oil pumped in. Surprisingly, it's slightly larger than the 650S, which is mainly due to the fact that interior space has been increased to make it more comfortable on longer journeys.
Go on, get geeky and tell me about the race technology...
Ok, you asked for it: adaptive dampers are fitted as standard, as well as a double wishbone suspension system at the front and rear. It packs anti-roll bars at each end and race-ready carbon ceramic brake discs. There's also McLaren's adjustable Electronic Stability Control system that allows driver to toggle between Normal, Sport and Track modes. The former keeps things neat and safe for the road, while the latter allows big, smoky drifts to occur on the safety of the circuit.
What's it like inside?
A lot of effort has been made to ensure the 570S is the most comfortable and "useable" McLaren to date. That means rock hard sports seats are relegated to the options list and instead, a pair of leather-wrapped thrones cosset occupant's behinds. The steering wheel is also wrapped in cow and the ace portrait-orientated 7-inch touchscreen is now housed within the dash rather than floating in the centre console.
Will I get plenty of gizmos to fiddle with?
Of course, this is a migthy expensive car so you definitely get Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, sat-nav and climate control. There's even an optional 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system should you get bored of the shouty V8.
It's got some tough competition though, hasn't it?
Yes it does. If the Porsche 911 Turbo wasn't enough to worry about, the McLaren also has to compete with the recently released Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S. Both cars have received rave reviews from critics and boast similar price tags. Audi has also recently updated its excellent R8, which now features some impressive interior tech, and Aston Martin continues to tempt with the now ageing DB9.
