Rise of the Tomb Raider raids PCs on 28 January

Following the Xbox exclusive debut, Lara heads elsewhere

Although it was overshadowed a bit by releasing on the same date as Fallout 4 – perhaps not the best tactical decision in our minds – Rise of the Tomb Raider was still one of the top Xbox One releases of the holiday season.

And soon it’ll be available to more players. While the initial November release was exclusive to Xbox One and Xbox 360 players, thanks to a deal between Microsoft and publisher Square Enix, PC players will be able to take on Lara Croft’s latest high-impact adventure later this month, on 28 January.

The game will launch on both Steam and the Windows Store, and like the PC version of the previous Tomb Raider game, it’ll see some nice enhancements over the console release. Most notable among those is support for 4K monitors, which should make this already-beautiful game look downright amazing (assuming you have the rig to power it), but Microsoft says that developer Crystal Dynamics “added a slew of awesome Windows-10 specific features” overall.

"It might pander to contemporary fashions," we wrote in our review, noting the increasing Uncharted parallels, "but that doesn’t stop Crystal Dynamics from injecting their creation with intelligence and excitement. It’s not exactly what hardcore fans wanted, but at some point you just have to let go and embrace progress. If you do, Rise will undoubtedly provide you with a thrilling adventure."

And what about PlayStation 4 owners? Sadly, it’s going to be a while. Although longtime fans might associate the series with PlayStation consoles, Microsoft’s exclusive deal here means that the PS4 version isn’t likely to release until around the end of the year. Luckily, you have Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End coming in the meantime, although the release date on that has slipped a couple times already.
