Every so often, along comes a device that just ticks all the boxes. Something like the Honor 8. We could give you a dozen reasons why this new flagship should be on top of your Diwali shopping list, but let’s start with the top 5.
You want the TLDR version? It looks great, has amazing cameras, is super-speedy, offers some nifty usability enhancements and has battery life to keep the power user happy. Still not convinced? Here you go, then…
1) It’s an amazingly well-designed device
We aren’t kidding. For starters, it’s the right size - 5.2in - which is just right if you like phones you can use with one hand. Yeah, no more fumbling around and no more worrying you’ll drop your new smartphone on the ground. Next, it’s super slim, which means you can heave a sigh of joy if you can’t bear to wear anything other than skinny jeans. And finally, with an aviation-grade alloy body and 2.5D glass on the back and front, it looks absolutely stunning. You gotta see how the light bounces off the glass, making it look almost like it were made of crystal.
2) The dual-camera system is out of this world
This is what really made us fall in love with the Honor 8. Selfie lovers will be very, very pleased with the 8MP front camera, which has extra-big 1.25um pixels. That means excellent low-light selfies. And there’s a special beauty mode if you’re worried you won’t look your best after a long night out in town.
And the piece de resistance has to be the dual-camera setup at the back. Yup, you get two 12MP sensors. One of the sensors works ‘normally’, and the other one works in monochrome. How does that help? The second, monochrome sensor really improves evening and dusk shots by gathering in a lot more light. It also makes it possible for Honor to offer you a depth-of-field mode. So you get to adjust the aperture of photos after you take them. Want to add some delicious background blur to a close-up of a flower? Go ahead, make your day.
But there’s a lot more to the Honor 8’s camera(s). Food mode, light painting, manual/pro mode… Frankly, we had so much fun playing with the camera, we almost didn’t get time to write this article.
3) It’s a well-specced powerhouse
This is probably when the more hard-nosed of our readers ask about the other specs. And it’s also when we point to the Honor 8’s remarkably meaty spec sheet. Yeah, it’s as much an all-rounder as any device can be. Powering this compact lil’ beauty is the octa-core Kirin 950 processor. And with 4GB RAM, its multitasking abilities are second to none. Even gamers will be happy with the Mali-T880MP4 GPU and the vibrant, 5.2in Full HD IPS display. At 423ppi, it sure makes for crisp text and detailed graphics. Other stuff to warm your geeky heart includes dual SIMs, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi, 4G, 32GB storage (you can also add microSD cards of up to 128GB capacity) and an IR transmitter. As you can see, the Honor 8 ticks every box you could think of.
4) You’ll love the Smart Key fingerprint sensor
We loved the Smart Key fingerprint sensor so much we think every phone should have one. Bring in a law, we say! Okay, it’s perfectly placed so your phone’s already unlocked by the time you pull it out of your pocket, but there’s more to it - it supports gestures so you can pull down the notification menu with just a swipe. And it gets smarter (there’s a reason why it’s dubbed a ‘Smart Key’)! You can click on it like a proper hardware button, and it’s very, very customisable - click, double click or press-and-hold to launch your fav apps!
5) Power users will love the battery life
And finally, a topic dear to the hearts of every power user - battery life. The Honor 8 excels here as well. A lot of the credit goes to the 3000mAh battery, which is a surprise considering how slim the Honor 8 is. And then, there’s the next-gen Kirin 950 processor, which runs cool and efficient. Rounding up this trifecta of engineering brilliance is EMUI 4.1, which adjusts power consumption on the fly and never lets any rogue app gobble up more battery life than required.
