A superb stroke by Skoda

The car with the legendary legroom is back and gunning for the Germans

Skoda has enjoyed reasonable success but unanimous adulation from car lovers since its foray into India, thanks to quality cars that sometimes excite and never disappoint.

The less said about their service support the better, but things are about to change for the better. Or for the Superb, since we’re on superlatives. The all-new Superb has just been announced and its already sending the Germans scurrying for their accountants.

Build around the new MQB platform, the new Superb is now 75kg lighter and more powerful than before. Both of these traits will translate into a better driving experience but we’ll reserve our comments until we drive one. Until then, lets ogle at the specs and the quality craftsmanship that Skoda is so proud of. The three new variants include a petrol engine with two transmission options and a single diesel variant.

Of course, both the engines get the option of the top-spec L&K trim which includes further goodies like a 12-speaker, 610-watt Canton hi-fi system, panoramic sunroof, ambient, Boss button to push around front seat passengers from the rear, stone beige perforated leather with Piano black lacquer, 3-spoke multifunctional steering wheel and lots of L&K badges sprinkled around the interior.

Powered by an updated 1.8TSI petrol motor good for 180bhp, the 7-speed DSG automatic or the 6-speed manual get almost the same fuel consumption figures, which is quiet a feat achieved by Skoda engineers. The diesel engine too is improved and now makes 177bhp and returns fuel economy numbers of 18kmpl. Shod with new design 17in alloy wheels wearing 215/55 rubber the, car looks planted and muscular from any angle, thanks to the perfect proportions and the tornado line that flows around the car in a 360 degree approach. Crystalline effect on the bi-xenon headlamps, sharp creases and a roof line that is reminiscent of a coupe all add to the allure.

Priced competitively from 22.68lacs to 29.36lacs for the top-end diesel L&K variant, the Skoda Superb is sure to ruffle a few German feathers. We can’t wait to get our hands behind one now.
