Carbon3D has just dropped a bombshell on the 3D printing world by announcing a new process which is 25-100 times faster than current methods.
Current 3D printing processes involve the printer producing several layers, to build up a 3D model, which can take quite a while. This new method instead removes the layering process altogether, resulting in incredibly smooth finishes and stronger models.
The printer itself has a special transparent, permeable window which allows light and oxygen to pass through it. The light itself would normally cure (harden) the resin, but the presence of oxygen prevents it from doing so. Light and oxygen pass through the layer in very specific patterns in areas that can be as precise as 2-3 red blood cells-thick. The lack of layers make this a much, much faster process overall.
The company has been working on and perfecting its new Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) process in secret since 2013, and it's understandably being pretty secretive about development at this stage.
We do however know that it has managed to secure US$41 million in funding from various venture capital firms, though there's still no word on when the technology will be made available to the masses.
Fingers crossed, we'll be printing out our own liquid T-1000 Terminator models in the not-too-distant future.
