Axis Bank’s Lime app combines mobile banking and online wallets with some neat features

Will gamification and sound-based transfers change how you bank?

One app to rule ‘em all? That’s what Axis Bank thinks its Lime app is. With mobile banking, wallet and payments all rolled into one, it might be just what many of you ‘responsible’ folks have been waiting for. But it’s got some more nifty features for the nutty geek in you.

A new banking app might not sound very exciting for you. Unless you’re the sort of person whose idea of a good weekend is to check all your credit card receipts before a delightful evening spent working on your financial plan. But wait a second, don’t dismiss Lime so fast...

This new app from Axis Bank offers an interesting mix of online banking and mobile wallet functionality - you can shop from within the app, buy stuff at ‘offline’ stores (they still exist, right?), book air tickets, pay your phone bills, send money to your friends, create and manage savings goals, save your receipts, analyse your spending habits, create a shared wallet…

In all, it’s a pretty full-featured banking app. But hang on, it’s nice to be responsible and grown up, and we’re sure your folks will be proud of you, but what about the thrills? You get that as well - Lime includes a gamified mode of rewarding you for being fiscally responsible. But the pièce de résistance has to be the sound-based money transfer feature - Yup, it emits a tone which other users’ phones can pick up. Though we think if we ever try this out, we’ll only do it if someone sends us money and not the other way round!
