We like music around here in the Stuff office.
It’s a necessity, especially when we want to pretend we are working so we don’t have to interact with our colleagues. Do we plug our beloved AKGs into an iPod then? Oh no sir, we are men (and women) of fine tastes here. We like our audio like we like our wine- dark, slightly expensive and oozing with quality. Which is where the Fiio X3 comes in. We were impressed by the Fiio X1 quite a bit when it launched even though it had its share of problems. The 2nd generation X3 offers a lot more (read DSD) at a reasonable price.
DSD is love, DSD is life
The ₹14,599 price-tag might seem a little expensive for a clunky looking audio player with no internal memory (128GB SD card slot) and (Gasp!) no touch screen. Consider this though, native DSD support means eargasmic audio quality, the likes of which your iPod can not even dream of. The X3 supports almost all popular lossless formats including WAV, FLAC, APE, WMA, ALAC, and AIFF. What makes the X3 click though, you might ask. Well, it makes use of two crystal oscillators, one each for the 44.1kHz and 48kHz frequency multiples. It also boasts of an audiophile-grade architecture and utilizes the Cirrus Logic CS4398 DAC coupled with its tuned, low-pass filter for exceptional sound.
All the technical jargon in the world can not simulate sound though. So, go to a store, give it a listen and decide. Or wait for our full review.
