Initially launched in 1999, the BMW X5 has grown in size and stature and 20 years on, it still remains popular for those looking to mix sporty driving with a bit of mountain carving. BMW is bringing the latest iteration to India in three variants, the X5 xDrive30d Sport (₹72,90,000), X5 xDrive30d xLine (₹82,40,000) and the X5 xDrive40i M Sport (₹82,40,000) which is the petrol variant and will join the diesels shortly. Packed to the gills with comfort, safety, and high-tech, the X5’s biggest party trick is the Reversing Assistant which keeps a track of the last 50 metres driven and can reverse its way back out the same way, completely unassisted! Wireless charging and Apple CarPlay, 3D navigation, surround view cameras, gesture control and twin 12.3in HD screens are all standard. Ambience is provided by the Panoramic glass roof Sky Lounge with LED light graphics and a concept called ‘Crafted Clarity’, which is BMW speak for glass embellishments in the gear selector, iDrive controller, audio control button and the start/stop button. The two-section tailgate can be unlocked using the Comfort Access System that unlocks the car automatically when the key is detected within a 1.5mt radius. Power comes from a 265bhp/620Nm 3.0lt 6-cyl diesel engine or the 3.0lt 6-cyl petrol motor that churns out 340bhp/450Nm an both versions come with the xDrive all-wheel drive system and Adaptive 2-Axle Air Suspension that can raise or lower the height of the car with a touch of a button on the centre console. We’re eager to take this one out on a weekend excursion and discover the X-factor!
