PlayStation Store’s summer sale arrives – and here are the best bargains

Dozens of PS4, PS3 and PS Vita games get huge discounts, so here’s what you should be buying

Steam’s Summer Sale may be over, but as one source of dirt cheap games dries up, another bursts forth from the ground.

This time, it’s the PlayStation Store chucking bargains into the air like some digital Old Faithful. Sony’s online emporium has just opened the doors on a six week-long Totally Digital sale, which includes big discounts on titles for the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita. There are even discounts on some pre-orders.

We’ve trawled through the hundreds of cut-price titles so you don’t have to. Here are our recommendations.

SOMA (PS4) - ₹665 (71 percent off)

In our five-star review of first-person incontinence stimulator SOMA, we praised not only the game’s scares but its gripping sci-fi story. At this price, you’d be mad not to pick it up.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture (PS4) - ₹998 (40 percent off)

Like a cross between The Day of the Triffids and The Archers, this exploration adventure set in 1980s rural England, is a true thing of beauty. Fantastic atmosphere and amazing music give short shrift to any “it’s just a walking simulator!” dismissals. Read our full review here.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number (PS4/PS3/PS Vita) - 665 (46 percent off)

No, it’s not quite as stellar as the first one (which is also on sale), but if you like your shooters tough, fast, stylish and incredibly bloody, this cross-buy purchase is a must. Full review here.

Catherine (PS3) - 332 (72 percent off)

The game with this sale’s largest discount is a bit of a sleeper hit. An action-platform-puzzler with a horror edge, Catherine brilliantly blends story and gameplay and is so unlike anything else that, for this price, PS3 owners shouldn’t ignore it.

Mad Max (PS4) - 1,498 (62 percent off)

Now this isn’t strictly part of the Totally Digital sale, but it’s on sale this week at a big discount so we’ve included it anyway. An open-world action adventure in the mould of the Arkham Batman titles, it’s not quite as slick a prospect as them – but for it’s well worth a punt. Read our review.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3) - 582 (47 percent off)

If you’re a PS3 owner who’s never got round to playing Uncharted 2, now’s your chance to make amends. Regarded by many critics as the Nathan Drake’s greatest adventure, Uncharted 2’s set pieces and running battles beat most Hollywood blockbusters for spectacle.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (PS4) - 832 (47 percent off)

Yes, it’s another walking simulator, this time set in a beautiful open world representing Red Creek Valley, Wisconsin. You’re investigating the disappearance of a young boy and using psychic powers to solve crimes that took place many years ago. To say any more would dispel the mystery.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions (PS3/PS Vita) - 499 (60 percent off)

A frenetic twin-stick shooter that paints your screen in a glorious cascade of neon, Dimensions is as visually stunning as it is spatially challenging. It’s not cross-play, so you’ll have to choose between the PS3 and PS Vita editions. Read our review of the app edition here.
