STRANGER THINGS / STRANGER THINGS 2

The first season of Stranger Things was so perfectly constructed that a follow-up felt risky. Both a nail-biting sci-fi horror and effortlessly stylish love letter to the 1980s, it was difficult to see how creators the Duffer Brothers could top it.

We needn’t have worried though, because if anything season two is more irresistibly binge-worthy than its predecessor. We’re back in the fictional midwestern town of Hawkins, a year after the events that saw Will Byers abducted by a sinister monster and taken to an alternate dimension.

But the D&D-loving preteen protagonists are afforded little downtime before they’re back on their BMX’s and facing a supernatural foe that makes the Demogorgon look small time.

IT FOLLOWS

It might adhere to one of the main horror movie rules outlined in Scream – having sex more often than not ends in your grisly demise – but the stylishly shot It Follows is anything but formulaic.

The killer curse here stalks victims slowly but incessantly - disguised as a normal passerby, family member or friend, which is perhaps the creepiest part - and there's apparently only one (horrible) way to lift it. That gives this indie chiller a sense of helpless dread that doesn’t let up until the credits roll.

The conjuring

There are spirits in the house and who you want to call? Ghostbusters. Thats right.

No. Not when there's a kid-killing spirit lurking around. And specially not when you have five daughters in the house. You call demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens conduct an initial investigation and conclude that the house may require an exorcism, but they need authorization from the Catholic Church and further evidence before they can proceed.

They discover that the house once belonged to an accused witch, Bathsheba, who sacrificed her week-old child to the devil and killed herself in 1863 after cursing all who would take her land. They find reports of numerous murders and suicides in houses that had since been built on the property.

What happens after that is pretty interesting.

Jaws

The great white shark and his famous diet has charmed us for many years. This Spielberg classic is worth a revisit if you've already watched it. If not, watch it now and it will keep you away from the shores for a long time to come.

The plot is fairly simple, a great white shark is hunting, rather snacking, on anything that comes its way. And some dumb dumbs think they can kill it.

The Shining

The most iconic movie from the 80s. The Shining is considered to be one of the best works of Stanley Kubric.

This psychological horror film is based on Stephen King's novel and is about a family that heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence.

His psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future which is also described to be 'shining'. But how things go from normal to devil screaming crazy will keep you hooked on from the get go.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

When five teenagers go to the backwoods for a weekend away, we can all guess what’s going to happen – or can we? Much like Scream back in 1996, The Cabin In The Woods plays with the audience’s expectations concerning the horror genre, leading to lots of knowing nods, chuckles and more than one scare. A movie for movie geeks, certainly – little wonder, with Joss Whedon as co-writer and producer.

HUSH

When a deaf novelist retires to a secluded woodland cabin to finish off her latest book and get over a breakup, she thinks loneliness is going to be her biggest problem. Instead, she ends up being hunted by a creepy psycho in a featureless mask. It is, we think you’ll agree, a situation that would be pretty pants-filling for anybody – but when you can’t hear the murderer coming, it’s even more fraught. It all makes for a clever twist on what might otherwise be a fairly run-of-the-mill horror yarn.
